The Charlotte Hornets are engaged in serious trade talks regarding star point guard LaMelo Ball, with a deal potentially materialising within the next 48 hours.

Multiple NBA franchises are aggressively pursuing the playmaker, and an agreement is expected swiftly if Charlotte’s substantial valuation is met.

The dynamic guard currently has three years remaining on his contract and becomes eligible to sign a two-year extension worth $119.2m (£94m) on 6 July.

Play-off heartbreak and injury struggles

Any departure would follow a revitalised campaign for the North Carolina franchise, who secured 44 regular-season victories before falling one win short of ending an eight-year play-off drought.

The former first-round draft pick averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists across 72 appearances last season, marking his healthiest campaign since 2022.

Persistent ankle issues had severely limited his availability over the previous three years, restricting him to just 105 total outings between the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons.

Emerging young core in Charlotte

Charlotte’s remarkable 25-win improvement last year was largely driven by a vibrant young supporting cast stepping up alongside their franchise centrepiece.

Forward Brandon Miller developed into the team’s leading scorer with 20.2 points per game, while Kon Knueppel finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting.

The sharpshooting debutant made NBA history by becoming the first rookie to lead the entire league in made three-pointers.

Controversy and future ambitions

The explosive ball-handler’s final appearances of the season were marred by controversy during a thrilling overtime victory against the Miami Heat in the initial play-in fixture.

He received a $35,000 (£27,600) fine for reckless contact that injured Miami centre Bam Adebayo, followed by an additional $25,000 (£19,700) penalty for using profane language during a post-match broadcast.

Despite apologising for the incident, the emotional high was short-lived as the Orlando Magic comprehensively dismantled Charlotte 121-90 in the decisive elimination game.

Speaking late in the season, the Californian native expressed affection for his current squad’s chemistry but maintained a desire for ultimate success.

“It’s definitely what you want, but it’s not what I’m satisfied with,” he said regarding the post-season push. “We try to win some championships for sure.”
