Golden State Warriors pursue LeBron James as Stephen Curry admits allure
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has acknowledged the allure of teaming up with long-time rival LeBron James, as the franchise actively pursues the unrestricted free agent.
The 36-year-old point guard addressed the speculation ahead of the American Century Championship golf tournament in Nevada on Thursday.
Golden State’s front office is attempting to lure the NBA’s all-time leading scorer to San Francisco, though they face stiff competition from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“Up until probably two, three years ago, that was like a pipedream question or even a thought,” Curry said.
“But that’s part of the allure. Him going into his 24th season, me going into my 18th, the battles we’ve had, that would be such a unique story in NBA history.”
Establishing a veteran connection
The two basketball icons have communicated via text message over the past week as free agency negotiations continue.
Furthermore, Warriors forward Draymond Green is currently holidaying with the four-time MVP in Puerto Rico.
Golden State’s management hopes this established mutual respect will help convince the veteran forward to join their ranks.
Their cause is aided by the presence of head coach Steve Kerr, who recently managed both superstars during their successful 2024 Olympic campaign.
“I don’t have a percentage, it’s kinda up to him,” Curry added when asked about the likelihood of a deal.
“I feel like any place he calls and says I want to play there, you move mountains to make it happen.”
Maintaining roster flexibility
Team executives are currently preserving financial flexibility and roster space to accommodate the coveted superstar.
They could theoretically execute additional trades using draft picks to further strengthen the squad before a final decision is made.
If the 39-year-old chooses another destination, Golden State faces the prospect of fielding an ageing roster projected to win between 37 and 45 games.
The Californian franchise has already secured Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and De’Anthony Melton in free agency, while Green is expected to agree fresh terms after opting out.
“The pitch is: Do you want to play good basketball and be around people that know how to play the game?” Curry stated.
“Hopefully raise our floor and our competitiveness this year. It’s a matter of where he sees himself fitting.”
