Indiana man charged over alleged stalking of Fever’s Sophie Cunningham
An Indiana man has been charged with felony stalking and intimidation after allegedly sending explicit threats to Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham.
Kevin Singh, 48, was arrested on Tuesday and faces an additional misdemeanour harassment charge, according to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The WNBA athlete told investigators she had been experiencing nightmares and staying at home more due to the relentless nature of the online abuse.
Escalating online behaviour and threats
The alleged conduct first came to the attention of the basketball star in February before rapidly escalating.
Prosecutors stated that the suspect’s behaviour became increasingly threatening after he was contacted by team security.
By April, the 48-year-old allegedly sent numerous explicit messages on the social media platform X, including one stating: “You’re literally down the street from me!”
A formal cease-and-desist letter was issued to Singh on 30 April, but this reportedly prompted further explicit and threatening comments.
Arena delivery and previous convictions
The harassment allegedly moved beyond the digital space in September when a package addressed to “Sophie” was hand-delivered to the Fever’s home arena.
According to an affidavit, the parcel contained a letter and a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt sprayed with men’s cologne.
Singh is already serving probation in Hendricks County after pleading guilty in July to two felony counts of invasion of privacy.
Prosecutor condemnation and wider context
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commended the victim for speaking out against the sustained harassment.
“The internet has made it easier than ever to target, harass and intimidate others. Threats of violence, whether face-to-face or behind a keyboard, will be taken seriously.”
Ryan Mears, Marion County Prosecutor
“Coming forward is never easy, regardless of a person’s position or public profile. The victim is setting an example by speaking out.”
This troubling incident follows a similar ordeal endured by her prominent team-mate, Caitlin Clark.
The former Iowa standout was previously stalked by a Texas man who was subsequently sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison last year.
