The Los Angeles Lakers and top-seeded Detroit Pistons are facing unexpected pressure in the opening round of the 2026 NBA playoffs following surprising weekend defeats.

The Western Conference giants failed to close out their series against the Houston Rockets on Sunday.

That result forces a decisive Game 5 back in California on Wednesday evening.

The eventual winner of this tie will face either the Phoenix Suns or the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

The reigning title-holders currently boast a commanding 3-0 lead and could secure their progression on Monday.

Top seeds falter in the East

Over in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons have struggled to find their rhythm against the Orlando Magic.

The eighth seeds currently hold a shock 2-1 series lead over a franchise that dominated the regular season with 60 victories.

A major factor in this upset has been the muted impact of All-Star big man Jalen Duren.

The Detroit standout has been thoroughly outplayed by Orlando counterpart Wendell Carter Jr.

During Game 3, the 22-year-old center managed just eight points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

This represents a significant drop in form for a player who averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% prior to the postseason.

Physicality disrupts the Detroit offense

The Florida-based outfit have successfully implemented a stifling defensive strategy to neutralise their higher-ranked opponents.

Detroit head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was forced to deploy Paul Reed early in the third quarter of Game 3 as his starters continued to struggle.

Bickerstaff admitted that his starting center has been entirely smothered by the aggressive defensive coverage.

He has not been able to get free on pick-and-rolls because of Orlando packing the paint.

Star guard Cade Cunningham now faces a mammoth task to rescue his team’s postseason ambitions.

Celtics cruise as other series remain tight

Elsewhere in the East, the Boston Celtics have heavily controlled their matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The second seeds hold a comfortable 3-1 advantage despite the recent return of Sixers star Joel Embiid.

Boston have dictated the tempo throughout the series by generating a high volume of three-point opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors remain deadlocked at two wins apiece.

The New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks are also tied at 2-2 in what is proving to be a highly competitive opening round.
