Milwaukee Bucks defend Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Miami Heat
Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst says trading Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat was a difficult decision but ultimately in the best interests of the franchise.
The historic deal, which concluded two weeks ago, saw the two-time MVP move to Florida in exchange for four players and significant draft capital.
“No one’s sitting here today and saying that we’re a better team today after trading Giannis,” Horst admitted to reporters.
“He’s one of the greatest players to ever play, greatest player in the franchise history.”
Building a new foundation
The blockbuster trade provided Milwaukee with three first-round draft picks, a pick swap, and a second-round selection to reshape their roster.
Horst explained that the Miami package was chosen specifically for the long-term flexibility it offers a transitioning organisation.
The Eastern Conference side are looking to reset after a disappointing campaign where they finished with a 32-50 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
Championship ambitions and a fresh start
The Greek forward had been vocal in recent seasons about his unwavering desire to compete for a second NBA championship.
Meanwhile, the Bucks have recently appointed Taylor Jenkins as their new head coach following the departure of Doc Rivers.
“This was not a ‘have to’ [situation],” Horst noted regarding the timing of the massive summer move.
“This was, we truly believed we’ve found an opportunity which is unique.”
The front office insisted they felt no overwhelming pressure to force a departure, viewing the separation as a mutually beneficial reset.
“He’s in a place that he’s got a real opportunity to do the things that he wants to do,” Horst concluded.
