NYPD assign record 10,000 officers to New York Knicks victory parade
The New York Police Department will deploy a record 10,000 officers to safeguard the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory parade in Manhattan this Thursday.
This massive security operation represents the largest number of police personnel ever assigned to a planned event in the city.
Authorities have ramped up their presence following chaotic street celebrations that led to 63 arrests and 10 injured officers after the team defeated the San Antonio Spurs.
Heavy security for the Canyon of Heroes
The specialized police contingent will utilise heavy weapons teams, explosive detection dogs, and aerial drones to monitor the expected massive crowds.
Beginning at Bowling Green park in the Financial District, the procession will travel north along Broadway before concluding at City Hall.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to present the newly crowned basketball champions with the keys to the city at the end of the historic ticker-tape route.
“From a playoff run that left New Yorkers breathless to a tip-in that will be talked about for decades, the Knicks have earned a hero’s welcome,” Mamdani said.
“We have dreamed of this moment for generations. This Thursday, our city will rise to the occasion.”
A long-awaited celebration for franchise legends
Despite securing NBA titles in 1970 and 1973, the celebrated franchise was never honoured with New York’s signature ticker-tape procession during those historic triumphs.
Franchise icons Walt Frazier and Patrick Ewing are expected to attend the festivities, alongside veteran play-by-play announcer Mike Breen serving as master of ceremonies.
Grammy Award-winning musician Alicia Keys has also been confirmed to perform during the highly anticipated civic reception.
“How could I not?” Keys said Wednesday in a social media post that featured her chatting with forward OG Anunoby.
