Trae Young plans to decline his $48.97m player option with the Washington Wizards for the 2026-27 season to enter free agency, though the franchise remains the front-runner to re-sign him.

The four-time All-Star will officially test the open market on Monday following a turbulent campaign disrupted by injury and a mid-season trade.

Multiple teams are expected to register their interest in acquiring the elite playmaker.

Injury setbacks and Atlanta exit

The point guard began last season intent on justifying a substantial max extension with the Atlanta Hawks.

However, a sprained right MCL suffered in late October sidelined the talisman until mid-December.

During his absence, the rapid emergence of Jalen Johnson prompted the Hawks to deal their former franchise face to Washington in January.

In exchange, Atlanta acquired CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert as they pivoted their roster strategy.

Building a new core in Washington

The dynamic scorer featured in just five games for the rebuilding Wizards after his arrival.

Across the entire injury-hit season, he averaged 17.9 points and 8.0 assists in a combined 15 appearances.

Washington initially traded for the elite distributor, who boasts a career average of 9.8 assists, to anchor an inexperienced squad.

The capital city franchise also acquired star big man Anthony Davis last season to partner with the veteran guard.

Looking toward the future

Management believes this established duo can elevate the team into playoff contention next year.

The Wizards have struggled significantly in recent times, suffering 64 or more losses in three consecutive seasons.

Washington hopes their seasoned leadership will guide promising young talents like Alex Sarr and the upcoming number one overall draft pick to future success.
