Kentucky defensive lineman Nic Smith has died at the age of 20 after being discovered unresponsive in a campus residence hall on Monday morning, with police suspecting no foul play.
The University of Kentucky confirmed the tragic passing of the sophomore student-athlete in an official statement.
Campus police received an emergency call shortly after 10:00 local time reporting a deceased student within a university dormitory.
Initial investigations conducted alongside the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner have ruled out any suspicious circumstances surrounding the sudden loss.
‘A tremendous loss for our program’
Head coach Will Stein expressed the collective grief of the Wildcats’ football community following the devastating news.
“Today our hearts are broken,” Stein said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.”
“This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory.”
A multi-sport talent from Georgia
The highly regarded prospect originally joined the collegiate ranks from Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia.
During his high school career, the versatile athlete excelled in both football and basketball before committing exclusively to the gridiron.
Affectionately known to his team-mates as “Happy” and “Big Happ”, the young defender redshirted during his freshman campaign last season as he adapted to the collegiate level.
Away from the field, he was actively pursuing a degree in the community leadership and development program at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
