Philadelphia Flyers tender $90m offer sheet to Ducks star Leo Carlsson

The Philadelphia Flyers have tendered a monumental five-year offer sheet worth $18m annually to Anaheim Ducks centre Leo Carlsson.

The restricted free agent remains under Anaheim’s control, giving the Californian franchise seven days to match the proposed contract under NHL regulations.

Should the Ducks decline to match the lucrative deal, Philadelphia must forfeit four future first-round draft picks as immediate compensation.

Cap space dictates Anaheim’s next move

Anaheim currently boasts approximately $35m in salary cap space to facilitate a matching offer.

Securing the 21-year-old’s long-term future had already been identified as a major offseason priority for general manager Pat Verbeek.

The franchise previously preserved financial flexibility by limiting their moves in the broader free agency market to accommodate their rising stars.

Flyers build an ambitious roster

Philadelphia entered the offseason with over $29m in available cap space to aggressively pursue top-tier talent.

Acquiring the Swedish international would add significant firepower to a roster already featuring eight players signed to long-term deals.

The Eastern Conference outfit reportedly still retains enough financial flexibility to agree terms with fellow restricted free agent Trevor Zegras.

An injury-hit but impressive breakthrough year

The 2023 second-overall draft pick has swiftly established himself as a cornerstone of the Ducks’ ambitious rebuilding project.

Despite battling injuries that ruled him out of the Winter Olympics for Sweden in February, the dynamic forward registered 29 goals and 67 points in just 70 regular-season appearances.

His exceptional domestic form propelled Anaheim to their first postseason appearance since 2018.

The young playmaker continued his stellar trajectory in the playoffs, amassing 15 points in 12 games before his team fell to the Vegas Golden Knights.
