The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a lucrative sign-and-trade agreement.

The 30-year-old is expected to sign an eight-year contract with an average annual value exceeding $8m (£6.3m).

This strategic move removes one of the most coveted offensive blueliners from the upcoming National Hockey League free-agent market.

It marks a significant early roster adjustment for new Toronto general manager John Chayka, who took charge of the franchise last month.

Late bloomer delivers career year

Raddysh enjoyed a spectacular breakout campaign during the 2025-26 season, setting career highs across the board.

The undrafted Canadian recorded 22 goals and 48 assists for a total of 70 points in 73 appearances for Tampa Bay.

He proved particularly lethal on the power play alongside Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel, utilising a booming point shot to score 10 times with the man advantage.

Such offensive numbers represent a remarkable rise for a player who only made his full NHL debut during the 2021-22 season.

Lightning forced into difficult departure

Tampa Bay management had reportedly hoped to retain the right-shot defenceman on a discounted contract to preserve essential salary cap space.

The Florida-based club are already preparing for a monumental contract extension for MVP candidate Kucherov on the horizon in 2027.

Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois recently praised the departing standout’s crucial contributions during an injury-hit season.

“He stepped up big time when we needed him this year. He’s a phenomenal player, and a key reason that we are as competitive as we are.”

Ultimately, the financial realities of the league forced their hand, allowing the Maple Leafs to secure a premier weapon ahead of July’s free agency window.
