Kimi Antonelli edges Lando Norris to top Dutch Grand Prix practice

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli set the pace ahead of Lando Norris in the sole practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix as Formula 1 returned from its summer break.

The Mercedes driver, who currently holds a commanding 50-point lead in the standings over Lewis Hamilton, bettered his British rival by just 0.121 seconds.

He asserted himself as the firm favourite for Friday’s sprint qualifying session with a display of relentless speed around the Zandvoort circuit.

Mercedes team-mate George Russell finished a close third as he attempts to reignite his campaign following a disappointing run of form before the August shutdown.

Ferrari upgrades show early promise

Ferrari introduced a new floor upgrade in the Netherlands and early indications suggest the modifications are yielding positive results.

Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished fourth and fifth respectively, completing their fastest laps earlier on a slower track compared to the front-runners.

McLaren have also brought rear upgrades to complete the package that propelled Norris to victory in Hungary last month.

Oscar Piastri could not match the blistering pace of his stablemate and finished more than half a second adrift.

Verstappen struggles at home

Further down the timesheets, newly re-signed Red Bull driver Max Verstappen languished in a disappointing 11th place.

The Dutch driver was visibly wrestling with the balance of his car throughout the crucial one-hour session.

It threatens to be a highly challenging weekend for the local hero at what is expected to be his final home event, with the race lacking a contract beyond this season.
