Max Verstappen has reportedly rejected a six-year contract extension from Red Bull, opting instead to evaluate his future amid the team’s ongoing struggles on the track.

According to former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, discussions over the Dutchman’s future took place during a recent meeting in Milton Keynes.

Red Bull’s hierarchy allegedly tabled a lucrative proposal to keep their star driver until 2032.

However, the four-time world champion swiftly declined the long-term commitment.

“Max apparently refused and said, ‘Well, I don’t need that right now; I’m on contract until 2028 anyway, so I’d rather wait and see.'”

Exit clause and summer break deadline

The reigning champion’s current deal includes a performance-related exit clause tied to this season’s championship standings.

If he drops outside the top two before the summer break, this contractual loophole will become active.

He currently trails Lewis Hamilton by 60 points in the drivers’ standings.

With Hamilton enjoying a resurgence at Ferrari and Mercedes extending their advantage, Red Bull face an uphill battle to secure his confidence.

Red Bull’s multi-million buyout plan

Management at the Milton Keynes-based outfit have reportedly accepted that their lead driver will not reach the required top-two position in time.

To prevent an unexpected departure, the team has devised a costly retention strategy.

German outlet Sports Bild suggests Red Bull intend to buy out the exit clause entirely.

They are prepared to offer a figure in the tens of millions to persuade the former prodigy to waive his right to leave.

Shifting dynamics within the team

Schumacher also highlighted potential internal friction at the reigning constructors’ champions.

“I get the feeling that Oliver Mintzlaff has faded into the background a bit. I reckon Mark Mateschitz has now made development a top priority, that’s why Max was in Austria.”

The German pundit added that trust between the key figures appears to have noticeably diminished.

Ultimately, industry experts believe the phenomenal talent will only stay if the team can guarantee a route back to the pinnacle of the sport.
