Georgia Hunter Bell secures European 1500m gold in tactical masterclass
Great Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell has secured her maiden European 1500m title with a brilliant tactical victory on the final night of competition in Birmingham.
The 32-year-old bided her time before unleashing a devastating kick with 150m remaining to leave the chasing pack with no answer.
Her magnificent performance on the home straight adds to an already stellar year, completing a remarkable treble of major titles:
- World Indoor Champion
- Commonwealth Games Champion
- European 1500m Champion
Embracing the pressure of expectations
Entering the event as the heavy favourite, the British runner admitted that delivering on expectations presented a unique mental challenge.
The cyber-security professional credited her demanding career away from the track for helping her handle the intense pressure of elite athletics.
“Going into things as the favourite and delivering is hard,” she admitted.
“It’s much harder than going in as an underdog, but it means a lot to prove to yourself you can do it as well as everyone else.”
Taking inspiration from a golden generation
The former World Championship 800m silver medallist revealed she has been heavily inspired by the confident mindset of compatriots like Josh Kerr and Amy Hunt.
“I really love how everyone in British athletics is pushing the bar up, we are in a fun era,” she said.
Looking ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, the middle-distance star faces an intriguing dilemma regarding her preferred event.
Having already proven her pedigree over two laps, she has not ruled out attempting to emulate Kelly Holmes by pursuing a famous 800m and 1500m Olympic double.
Methodical planning yields results
A rigorous preparation strategy with her coaching team, including established mentor Jenny Meadows, has been crucial to her consistency on the international stage.
