Morning-line favourite Renegade has been handed a challenging start for the 152nd Kentucky Derby on 2 May after drawing the inside number one post in a 20-horse field.

The Todd Pletcher-trained colt, to be ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr, has been installed at 4-1 odds despite the historically difficult starting position.

No horse has managed to win the prestigious Louisville race from the rail draw since Ferdinand achieved the feat in 1986.

Cox and Baffert field strong challengers

Trainer Brad Cox presents a formidable threat to the favourite with three entrants, led by Commandment and Further Ado.

Both horses are currently priced as the joint-second choices at 6-1, breaking from posts six and 18 respectively.

Cox will also saddle 20-1 outsider Fulleffort, who faces a difficult task after drawing the far outside number 20 post.

Elsewhere, two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert is seeking a historic seventh victory in the celebrated event.

Baffert chases history as late changes alter field

A win for the legendary horseman would break his current tie with Ben Jones for the most Kentucky Derby triumphs by any trainer.

Baffert will rely on Potente from post 14 and late addition Litmus Test in gate four to secure the outright record.

The latter secured a place in the 20-horse lineup on Saturday after Steve Asmussen opted to withdraw Chip Honcho.

Connections for the withdrawn runner will instead point their focus toward the Preakness Stakes later in May.
