Scottie Scheffler cards 10-under 60 to lead Travelers Championship
Scottie Scheffler has taken the second-round lead at the Travelers Championship on Friday after narrowly missing a birdie putt on the 18th hole for a historic sub-60 round in Connecticut.
The American had to settle for a spectacular 10-under-par 60 on the rain-softened TPC River Highlands course.
A 25-foot attempt on the final green would have seen him join Jim Furyk as the only players in PGA Tour history to record multiple sub-60 rounds.
Instead, the 2022 tournament champion finished his day at 16 under par to establish an early two-shot advantage over the chasing pack.
Hovland applies early pressure
Conditions proved ideal for extreme low scoring during the final signature event of the regular season.
Viktor Hovland matched his career-best tour score with a 61, finishing his round just two strokes adrift of the lead.
The Norwegian required birdies on his final two holes to break the 60 barrier but ultimately recorded consecutive pars.
Meanwhile, Akshay Bhatia surged up the scoreboard with an exceptional round of 62 to remain firmly in contention.
Chasing a historic tour record
Scheffler previously broke the 60 mark during his rookie season when he fired a 59 at The Northern Trust in 2020.
Furyk remains in a league of his own, having shot a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship before setting the overall tour record of 58 at this exact tournament in 2016.
The current pacesetter arrived in New England carrying strong form following a tied-fourth finish at the U.S. Open last weekend.
He will now seek to convert this dominant start into a second victory of the year, having previously triumphed at The American Express in January.
