Alex Manninger’s wife pays tribute after former Arsenal goalkeeper’s death
The wife of former Arsenal and Liverpool goalkeeper Alex Manninger has paid an emotional tribute to her husband following his tragic death in a collision with a train in Austria.
Manninger, 48, died last week when his vehicle was struck at a level crossing in Salzburg.
Local authorities reported that the car was dragged several metres by a locomotive in the district of Pabing.
‘Unimaginable pain’
Emily Manninger took to social media to share her heartbreak over the sudden loss of the Austrian international.
She described the former shot-stopper as her best friend and an amazing father to their two sons, Alexander and Nicolas.
“I cannot express the unimaginable pain I am feeling,” she wrote.
“We are not the sort of family to share such sorrow and pain publicly, but I have no choice, as the outpouring of love from around the world has overwhelmed me.”
A distinguished career
During a 22-year professional journey, the highly-regarded keeper represented 15 different clubs across Europe.
He famously won the Premier League and FA Cup double during his time in north London.
The well-travelled professional eventually retired after a final stint on Merseyside under Jurgen Klopp.
His widow reflected fondly on their life together, recalling family holidays and his remarkable ability to connect with others.
“You were extremely respectful – calm, genuine, organised, driven, kind-hearted, gentle, and loyal,” she added.
“Receiving the news has broken me as a person, and our family as a whole.”
Both Arsenal and Liverpool have publicly sent their condolences following the tragic news.
