Andoni Iraola outlines his Anfield vision as new Liverpool head coach
New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has outlined his vision for the club during their pre-season tour of the United States following his appointment as Arne Slot’s successor.
Speaking to reporters in Chicago, the 44-year-old discussed his pragmatic approach and his desire to repair a fractured squad.
The Spaniard previously guided Bournemouth to a club-record sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
That achievement secured Europa League football for the South Coast side and ultimately caught the attention of the Anfield hierarchy.
Rejecting a move to Merseyside
The former Rayo Vallecano boss famously rejected a transfer to the Reds as a player in 2013, opting to stay with his boyhood team Athletic Club.
He sent a gracious thank-you letter to the English giants at the time, a gesture that left a lasting impression on senior club figures.
However, the tactician politely declined to elaborate on the details of that past correspondence.
“I don’t know if I want to tell you this story so early in my career here,” Iraola said.
“I would like to win some games first. Look, it is a nice story but if you remember in some months, you can ask me again.”
Assessing the current squad
The new manager is currently evaluating his players first-hand during their opening week of pre-season preparations in America.
He will soon be joined by a host of senior internationals, including last summer’s marquee arrivals Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
They will form part of an initial 31-player travelling party looking to bounce back from a difficult domestic campaign.
Iraola replaces Slot, who departed in May after a challenging second season in charge.
The Dutchman had remarkably won the Premier League title during his debut campaign before results sharply declined.
Clean break from Bournemouth
The former full-back announced his departure from the Cherries in April to ensure a smooth transition.
“The process with Bournemouth was very, very clean,” Iraola explained.
“I still have a very, very good relationship with everyone there. We decided to announce it when it was good for both sides.”
He will now be tasked with uniting the passionate fanbase and returning his new team to the pinnacle of English football.
