Arsenal defeat Manchester City to claim Community Shield victory
Arsenal have commenced the new season by securing the Community Shield with a resounding 3-0 victory over Manchester City at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
The reigning Premier League champions picked up exactly where they left off to lay down an emphatic early marker against their domestic rivals.
Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 24 seconds following excellent midfield build-up play from academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Kai Havertz doubled the advantage with a close-range header before captain Martin Odegaard sealed the triumph shortly after the half-time interval.
Odegaard leads by example
The Norwegian playmaker produced a standout performance and crowned his display by cleverly deceiving Gianluigi Donnarumma before passing into an unguarded net.
“We wanted to start with the first trophy, and we did. We played some brilliant football. It’s a great way to start the season.”
Martin Odegaard
The comprehensive defeat marks a disappointing competitive debut for new City manager Enzo Maresca, who took charge of the opposing dugout this summer.
New arrivals make immediate impact
The curtain-raiser offered supporters a first glimpse of high-profile signing Bruno Guimaraes operating within a revamped midfield system.
The former Newcastle United talisman quickly demonstrated his combative qualities by successfully tracking the dangerous Jeremy Doku during the opening exchanges.
Mikel Arteta’s side will now carry immense confidence into Friday’s top-flight opener as they look to successfully defend the league crown they captured last term.
Historical precedent does suggest caution, however, as no Community Shield winner has gone on to lift the Premier League trophy since 2018.
