Aston Villa agree £38m deal to sign Joao Gomes from relegated Wolves
Brazil international Joao Gomes is set to complete a £38m move to Aston Villa from relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers following a medical on Thursday.
The 25-year-old has already departed his current team’s pre-season training camp in Portugal to finalise the impending switch.
The Premier League side will pay an initial £34m fee, with a further £4m structured as performance-related add-ons.
Midfield rebuild follows significant departures
The Birmingham-based club urgently require reinforcements in the centre of the pitch following the £35m sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.
Their options have been further depleted by a severe knee injury sustained by Amadou Onana while representing Belgium at the World Cup.
The Belgian enforcer is expected to remain sidelined until next year, accelerating the need for immediate acquisitions.
Alongside the Brazilian ball-winner, Villa are also close to securing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record fee exceeding £50m.
A bright spark in a dismal campaign
Spanish giants Atletico Madrid had previously shown strong interest in securing the South American’s signature but ultimately failed to finalise an agreement.
The former Flamengo prospect made 41 appearances across all competitions last season as his side finished bottom of the Premier League table.
Despite the collective struggles at Molineux, the dynamic midfielder remained a consistent performer in the English top flight.
He departs the Black Country having played 130 times and scored seven goals since arriving from his homeland in 2023.
