Aston Villa sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in £38m transfer deal
Aston Villa have completed the £38m signing of Brazil midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers to bolster their squad following a serious injury to Amadou Onana.
The 25-year-old makes the move across the Midlands for an initial £34m, with a further £4m payable in potential add-ons.
He departed his former club’s training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo a medical and finalise terms at Villa Park.
Spanish side Atletico Madrid had also expressed significant interest in acquiring the talented South American before the Premier League outfit secured his signature.
Midfield reinforcement follows Onana setback
This swift transfer accelerates the club’s recruitment plans after Onana sustained a severe knee injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup.
The injured enforcer is expected to remain sidelined until next year, leaving a significant void in the middle of the pitch.
Adding further depth, the Villans also finalised a club-record agreement worth more than £50m for Freiburg standout Johan Manzambi on Friday.
Ending a productive spell at Molineux
Gomes leaves his previous employers after accumulating 130 appearances and scoring seven goals across all competitions.
The combative midfielder originally arrived in English football from Brazilian giants Flamengo in 2023.
He remained a key figure last season, featuring 41 times during a difficult campaign that saw his former team finish bottom of the league table.
