Barcelona release statement after worker dies at Camp Nou stadium
A 54-year-old construction worker has died following a fatal accident during the ongoing redevelopment of Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.
Catalan regional police confirmed the man suffered a fatal blow while working at the site on Friday.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, and authorities have now launched a formal investigation into the incident.
Club offers condolences
The La Liga side released an official statement to express their deep regret over the workplace tragedy.
Joan Laporta, the club president, also offered his personal support to the grieving family.
“FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of the worker who lost his life yesterday in the workplace accident that occurred during the renovation works at Spotify Camp Nou.”
The statement added that the Catalan giants extend their heartfelt support to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues.
Major stadium redevelopment
Construction work at the iconic Spanish ground began in June 2023 as part of a massive modernisation project.
The extensive rebuild is expected to cost approximately £1.1bn and will eventually increase the venue’s capacity to 105,000.
This ambitious expansion will make the renovated arena one of the largest sporting grounds in world football.
The overall architectural project is scheduled for completion in early 2028.
