Newcastle United could earn millions in future bonuses after Anthony Gordon completed a £69.3m move to Barcelona featuring three highly lucrative add-on clauses.

The English winger has committed to a five-year contract in Spain understood to be worth £300,000 per week.

His staggering new agreement runs until 2031 and will ultimately cost the Catalan club nearly £80m in combined wages.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson negotiated a trio of performance-related stipulations that ensure the Magpies remain financially invested in the forward’s success.

Appearance and success bonuses

The Premier League club will collect £860,000 per season if the former Everton attacker features in at least 60% of Barcelona’s matches.

This appearance bonus alone could generate an additional £4.3m over the lifespan of his contract at the Camp Nou.

A further £4.3m will be triggered should the Liverpudlian help his new employers secure domestic or European silverware.

Barcelona have claimed the La Liga title for the past two seasons, making this trophy-related payment a highly realistic prospect.

Sell-on profits and World Cup form

Wilson also shrewdly inserted a sell-on clause into the transfer agreement to capture a percentage of any future departure from Catalonia.

Everton are already benefiting from a similar arrangement, with the Merseyside club due 15% of the initial £69.3m fee following his 2023 switch to St James’ Park.

The Spanish giants opted to pursue the lightning-fast forward ahead of Marcus Rashford, who previously impressed during a loan spell with the club last season.

However, the new signing has recently struggled to replicate his blistering domestic form on the international stage under Thomas Tuchel.

The England manager retained him in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s World Cup fixture against Ghana, but the attacker appeared a pale imitation of his usual self.

He will now face stiff competition to retain his starting place when the Three Lions face Panama on Saturday night.
