Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen believes the Netherlands possess the best defence in world football ahead of their 2026 World Cup campaign.

The 23-year-old is preparing for his first major global tournament as the undisputed first choice for the national side.

Ronald Koeman’s squad travel to the United States, Canada and Mexico ranked as eighth favourites by bookmakers.

They begin their group stage journey against Japan on 14 June.

Elite defensive options

Despite outside scepticism, the Dutch boast an intimidating array of defensive talent.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk anchors a backline that includes Premier League stars Micky van de Ven, Nathan Ake and Jurrien Timber.

They are further bolstered by Denzel Dumfries, who is reportedly set to join Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho’s first marquee signing at the Bernabeu.

This wealth of elite options provides significant comfort for the man between the posts.

“It makes my life a bit easier, that’s for sure. I’ve got the big privilege to be able to play with a defensive line that I think is up there with the best in the world.”

Underdog status embraced

The Oranje have historically fallen short on the biggest stage, suffering painful final defeats and penalty shoot-out heartbreak.

Their current squad features intense attacking form alongside their defensive solidity.

Donyell Malen arrives in North America having scored 14 goals in 18 Serie A appearances for Roma since a January transfer.

A midfield trio of Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders provides further top-level European experience.

Consequently, the former Anderlecht shot-stopper is unfazed by those writing off his nation’s chances.

“I don’t really pay attention to what other people say about the team. I know the quality that we have, and I know that the people who will underestimate us will be surprised in the tournament.”

Van Dijk’s final push

The upcoming tournament carries extra significance for national team captain Van Dijk.

The veteran centre-back will turn 35 during the finals, making this likely his last opportunity to lift the prestigious trophy.

He previously featured in the 2022 edition in Qatar, where the Dutch suffered a fiery quarter-final exit against eventual winners Argentina.
