Bayern Munich confirm medication change caused Jamal Musiala collapses

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has confirmed that a recent change in medication caused Jamal Musiala to collapse twice in four days.

Earlier this week, the midfielder revealed he is undergoing treatment for a neurological dysfunction that triggers brief absence seizures.

The Bavarian club noted that signs of the condition were present before the World Cup, though it had not previously impacted his playing career.

Side effects from treatment plan

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s German Supercup clash against Borussia Dortmund, Kompany explained the root cause of the recent incidents against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.

“I spoke with Jamal, he said, ‘no problem, you can say it’,” stated Kompany.

“He made a slight change to his treatment, which caused some side effects.”

The Belgian manager emphasised that the initial shock occurred a long time ago and the club has since consulted leading medical experts.

Club offers unwavering support

Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl reiterated the organisation’s complete commitment to the German international.

“We’ve known about it the entire last season, and for us, it’s become part of everyday life,” said Eberl.

“We will give him all our support, have already done so, and will continue to do so.”

The attacking talent has been ruled out of the upcoming Supercup opener, alongside teammates Lennard Maloney and Serge Gnabry.

He is now scheduled to train individually before the squad begins their Bundesliga campaign against Stuttgart.

Understanding absence seizures

In a recent social media statement, the playmaker shared that managing these seizures has become a routine part of his life.

Absence seizures are a generalised neurological condition that commonly affects young adults and can cause a temporary loss of balance.

Dr Meneka Sidhu, a consultant neurologist in London, explained that typical episodes last only seconds and can leave the affected individual appearing blank.

“It can be very short-lasting, and the person can continue like nothing happened,” she noted.

Longer-lasting atypical absences can occasionally result in the patient experiencing automatic and involuntary movements.
