Garcia clarifies controversial World Cup comments
Belgium manager Rudi Garcia has issued a statement to clarify controversial comments made following his side’s dramatic 3-2 World Cup victory over Senegal.
The 62-year-old sparked criticism after suggesting “these teams” surrender control late in matches to instinctively protect an advantage.
Reporters immediately challenged the phrasing, questioning whether the remarks were disrespectful towards African nations.
The veteran coach initially grew defensive during his press conference before releasing a formal explanation a day later.
Garcia denies targeting African nations
Taking to social media, the head coach insisted his words had been misinterpreted by both the media and the opposition.
“To revisit my post-match statement and clear up any ambiguity: when I spoke of ‘those teams,’ I was referring to teams accustomed to managing a lead in high-level World Cup matches.”
“My comments were by no means aimed at African teams; they could just as easily have applied to Asian, South American, or European teams unfamiliar with that type of pressure.”
He added that abandoning tactical shape to defend a result at all costs is often counterproductive on the international stage.
Tielemans completes stunning turnaround
The off-field controversy has largely overshadowed a remarkable comeback from the European side, who had appeared destined for elimination.
Senegal dominated large spells of the contest, taking a commanding lead through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr.
However, late strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans rescued the tie and forced the match into extra time.
In the 125th minute, Tielemans converted a penalty following a lengthy VAR review that penalised Lamine Camara for a foul in the box.
The Red Devils will now prepare to face the United States for a place in the quarter-finals.
