Bolton Wanderers have secured their return to the Championship after a seven-year absence by beating Stockport County 4-1 in the League One play-off final at Wembley.

The emphatic victory ends a turbulent period for the club, who had slipped as low as League Two during their time away from the second tier.

Success comes at the third time of asking in the past four seasons for a resilient side determined to escape the third division.

Ruben Rodrigues was the hero on the day, striking twice to ensure promotion in front of a 48,268-strong crowd.

Early drama sets the tone

The encounter exploded into life within the opening three minutes when Rodrigues capitalised on a glaring error.

Stockport goalkeeper Corey Addai mishandled a tame long-range effort, allowing the Portuguese midfielder to bundle the ball home.

However, their opponents responded positively and thought they had equalised almost immediately through Adama Sidibeh.

The celebrations were swiftly cut short when the Video Assistant Referee ruled the forward had tripped George Johnston in the build-up.

Stockport fight back before collapsing

Sidibeh refused to be deterred and deservedly restored parity on the half-hour mark with a precise header.

The attacker met Odin Bailey’s inviting inswinging cross to direct the ball expertly into the bottom corner.

Despite the setback, the Trotters regrouped and seized control of the contest midway through the second half.

A rapid attack saw Amario Cozier-Duberry’s shot parried by Addai straight into makeshift centre-back Kyle Wootton, who inadvertently steered the ball into his own net.

Spectacular finish seals promotion

With momentum firmly on their side, the Lancashire club extended their advantage through a moment of sheer brilliance.

Sam Dalby executed a stunning acrobatic bicycle kick in the 81st minute to put the game beyond reach.

The match ended in frustration for Stockport as Josh Dacres-Cogley was shown a straight red card deep into stoppage time for pulling Ibrahim Cissoko’s hair inside the penalty area.

Rodrigues calmly stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick, sparking wild celebrations and confirming a long-awaited return to the Championship.
