Chelsea face growing calls to be stripped of five Premier League titles following a record fine and transfer ban for financial breaches during the Roman Abramovich era.

The west London club were recently handed a £10.75m penalty for violating rules regarding financial reporting, third-party investment, and youth development.

These infractions occurred while the Russian billionaire controlled the Stamford Bridge outfit between 2003 and 2022.

Critics have heavily condemned the leniency of the punishment, suggesting their historical achievements should now come with a severe asterisk.

Spurs and Arsenal among potential beneficiaries

During a highly successful 19-year spell under their former owner, the Blues secured five top-flight domestic crowns alongside two Champions League triumphs.

Should retrospective action erase those achievements, several rival clubs would see their historical records instantly upgraded.

The most dramatic shift would occur in the 2016-17 season, hypothetically handing Tottenham Hotspur their first ever Premier League trophy.

The north Londoners finished just seven points adrift of Antonio Conte’s dominant side during that campaign.

Manchester United in line for historical upgrades

Jose Mourinho delivered back-to-back championships during his initial, widely celebrated stint in England.

Stripping the 2004-05 title would retrospectively crown an Arsenal squad that had remarkably completed an unbeaten ‘Invincibles’ season just one year prior.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United would subsequently inherit the 2005-06 and 2009-10 trophies.

Manchester City would also benefit, hypothetically claiming the 2014-15 championship originally secured by the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’.

Pundits demand harsher sanctions

Abramovich was ultimately forced to sell the club in 2022 following intervention from the UK government over his alleged ties to Vladimir Putin.

Despite the change in ownership, the fallout from his tenure continues to generate fierce debate across the footballing landscape.

Outspoken broadcaster Simon Jordan insisted that merely fining the current regime is completely insufficient.

“You’re not an elite football club. What you were, were elite cheats.”
