Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has revealed he narrowly avoided groin surgery last season, as he prepares to reunite with new £117m signing Morgan Rogers.
The England international struggled with the persistent issue throughout his first campaign at Stamford Bridge.
A rushed comeback aggravated the problem, leaving the former Manchester City academy graduate unable to perform at his desired level.
“The first few months, with me being injured, I just wanted to go out and play, which I probably shouldn’t have done,” he explained to reporters in Sydney.
“Obviously I couldn’t play how I wanted to play. It was a bad season personally with injuries and stuff but I feel good now.”
Seeking specialist medical advice
In an effort to resolve the debilitating complaint, the 22-year-old travelled to Scandinavia to consult with medical specialists.
Discussions regarding an operation took place, but the attacking midfielder ultimately opted for a restorative seven-week summer break instead.
He recently returned to full fitness, providing an assist during a 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.
Record signing sparks reunion
Optimism surrounding the Blues’ upcoming campaign has been further boosted by the £117m arrival of Rogers from Aston Villa.
The blockbuster transfer reunites two close friends who previously developed together in Manchester City’s youth setup.
The Chelsea star admitted he was in constant contact with his compatriot once he learned of the London club’s interest.
“Morgs told me straightaway when he was coming. It didn’t get leaked. Nobody knew. Just me and him and the higher people at the club,” he said.
Trademarking the ‘cold’ celebration
The reunion also brings a lighthearted dispute over the signature ‘cold’ celebration, which the west London star recently secured legal rights to protect.
He originally adopted the gesture from his new club team-mate and joked about enforcing his trademark.
“I’ve trademarked it so if he tries to do anything, he’ll have the bailiffs at his door,” he laughed.
Despite the playful banter, the creative playmaker believes their contrasting styles will greatly benefit the squad.
“We’re two different players. He’s more physical than me, on and off the ball. He likes to drive with it. I like to play passes,” he concluded.
