Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso dismisses Enzo Fernandez transfer rumours
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has firmly rejected speculation surrounding the future of Enzo Fernandez ahead of their Premier League opener against Fulham.
The Argentine midfielder was recently linked with a summer departure from Stamford Bridge amid strong interest from Manchester City.
However, the defending champions, now managed by former Blues head coach Enzo Maresca, failed to submit a bid before a £120m valuation deadline passed last Friday.
Despite the ongoing uncertainty, the newly appointed Spanish manager insists his star player remains entirely focused on the upcoming campaign.
Hostile reception at Stamford Bridge
The 25-year-old faced a difficult reception from his own supporters during a pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad last weekend.
A section of the crowd jeered the £107m signing as he entered the pitch, following scattered boos when his name was announced before kick-off.
The South American previously expressed a desire to join Real Madrid earlier this year, though the Spanish giants publicly denied any interest.
He has endured a turbulent period on the international stage recently, famously receiving a red card in the World Cup final before scoring an equaliser against England in the semi-finals.
Commitment to the cause
When pressed on whether the midfielder had explicitly stated his intention to stay in west London, the Chelsea boss refused to be drawn into the debate.
“He’s training really well with a good attitude, and that’s what we want,” Alonso stated.
The club now expects the player to remain until at least next summer, although the transfer window remains open until 1 September.
Joao Pedro extends stay
In a separate boost for the west London club, Brazilian striker Joao Pedro has committed his future to Chelsea by signing a new contract.
The forward has also inherited the number nine shirt previously worn by Liam Delap.
“His development as a great player and as a leader is very noticeable each day and in each game,” Alonso remarked.
