Christian Pulisic misses USMNT training before Australia World Cup clash
United States forward Christian Pulisic continued to train away from his teammates on Thursday as he battles a calf injury ahead of a crucial World Cup group match against Australia in Seattle.
The prolific attacker appeared at practice with a wrap around his ailing left leg before retreating to the gym to work alongside medical staff.
His continued absence from full training raises serious doubts about his availability for the upcoming Group D fixture with just 24 hours until kickoff.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is expected to provide a definitive update on his talisman’s fitness during a scheduled press conference later on Thursday.
Injury setback threatens World Cup campaign
The 26-year-old initially sustained the calf problem during practice last week and subsequently aggravated the issue during a resounding 4-1 victory over Paraguay.
Despite the recurrence of the injury, the American forward managed to complete some individual field work on Wednesday before returning to an indoor fitness regime.
Teammate Weston McKennie remains uncertain about the attacking midfielder’s current physical condition but insists the squad is maintaining a positive outlook.
“I’m more just the energy guy, you know, either way, just trying to get good spirits and hopefully he can be there tomorrow,” McKennie told reporters.
McKennie added that both the player and the national team’s medical personnel are doing everything within their power to ensure a swift recovery.
Pochettino considers attacking alternatives
If the former Chelsea man fails a late fitness test, Pochettino possesses several capable deputies waiting in the wings to lead the American attack.
Giovanni Reyna presents a compelling option after successfully finding the back of the net against Paraguay last Friday.
The Argentine tactician could also turn to Marseille winger Timothy Weah, Leeds United’s Brenden Aaronson or Club América forward Alejandro Zendejas to fill the creative void.
