Cristiano Ronaldo expects to retire from football at end of season
Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he will likely retire from professional football at the end of the current season, citing a desire to leave a spectacular legacy.
The 41-year-old forward currently holds a contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr that runs until June 2027.
Despite that long-term agreement, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has given his clearest indication yet that his playing days are drawing to a close.
Speaking in a recently published interview with Vogue magazine, the legendary attacker outlined his immediate plans for the future.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.”
World Cup exit and future plans
The Portuguese captain previously stated last November that he expected to continue playing for a further one or two years.
He also confirmed at the time that the 2026 World Cup would be his final major international tournament.
Portugal were eliminated from that competition by Iberian rivals Spain last month, prompting further speculation about the veteran’s next steps.
Although he initially declined to specify an exact retirement date following that knockout defeat, the prolific goalscorer has now begun planning for a life away from the pitch.
Preparing for life after football
The five-time Champions League winner explained that he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and pursuing new personal interests.
“I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard.”
Acknowledging the potential void left by stepping away from the sport, the sporting icon emphasised the importance of finding various ways to fill his schedule.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
The Al Nassr captain intends to travel extensively and play padel while enjoying the rewards of his historic career.
“Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”
The revealing interview took place just five days before the footballing great married his long-term partner Georgina Rodriguez in an intimate ceremony in Cascais, Portugal.
