Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to help Portugal secure a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their World Cup Group K match in Houston on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old forward ended a three-and-a-half-year international tournament goal drought to announce his arrival at the current competition.

After a frustrating opening game against Congo DR, the veteran attacker silenced his critics with a vintage performance in Texas.

Following the final whistle, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner looked directly into a television camera and repeatedly shouted “I’m back” in English.

Historic World Cup milestones

By finding the net in Houston, the Portuguese captain became the first male player to score in six different World Cup tournaments.

His overall tally now stands at 10 goals on the sport’s biggest global stage.

He also holds the unique distinction of being both the youngest and oldest player to ever score for his country in this competition.

Prior to Tuesday’s breakthrough, the iconic forward had endured 10 consecutive matches without a major tournament goal, including the entirety of Euro 2024.

Martínez maintains faith in veteran

Manager Roberto Martínez consistently defended his star player amid intense scrutiny following their opening group fixture.

“Cristiano opens up spaces with his movements,” Martínez said before the match.
“He’s the best at doing that. The numbers support him.”

The player himself acknowledged the immense pressure facing the squad after drawing a blank last week.

“I can say it was a very tough week, a difficult week, where public opinion was very harsh on us, on all the players, but especially on me and the coach,” Ronaldo admitted.
“I’ve been a professional for 23 years. When things go well, Cristiano is great; when they go badly, he’s ‘finished’ or ‘too old.’ That’s just how it is.”

Joining the race for the Golden Boot

The resounding 5-0 victory places the European side in a commanding position within Group K.

The Houston crowd heavily favoured Portugal, cheering every touch made by their talismanic leader.

With his brace, the legendary forward joins fellow superstars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland in making an early mark on the scoring charts.
