Crystal Palace hold talks with Gareth Southgate over interim manager role
Crystal Palace have opened discussions with former England boss Gareth Southgate regarding a potential return to Selhurst Park as interim manager until the end of the season.
The Eagles are considering a managerial change following a dismal run of form that has yielded just one victory in their last 15 matches across all competitions.
Current head coach Oliver Glasner held crisis talks with the club’s hierarchy on Friday regarding an immediate exit, though it was initially decided the Austrian would remain in post for the time being.
Relegation fears mount
Chairman Steve Parish is reportedly actively exploring alternatives amid growing concerns that the south London club could be dragged into a Premier League relegation battle if results do not improve immediately.
Southgate has been out of work since resigning from the England national team job following the defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last summer.
The 54-year-old began his playing career at Selhurst Park and the club hope this strong personal connection could persuade him to take charge on a short-term basis.
Glasner admits struggles
Supporters have voiced their frustration with Glasner, particularly following a midweek draw with Zrinjski in the Uefa Conference League.
Following that stalemate, the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss admitted he felt unable to elicit the necessary reaction from his squad to reverse their slump.
While it remains uncertain if the former Middlesbrough manager is ready to return to the dugout, he is understood to be edging closer to a Premier League comeback.
Long-term targets
Any potential appointment of Southgate is viewed strictly as a temporary measure to navigate the remainder of the current campaign.
Reports suggest that Crystal Palace have identified Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their primary target to lead the team on a permanent basis from next season.
A move for Southgate would allow Glasner to depart before his contract expires in the summer, a scenario the current manager is reportedly open to.
