Feyenoord have moved their training camp to Belgium to allow new signing Raheem Sterling to practice with the squad while awaiting a Dutch work permit.

Work permit delays prompt logistical switch

Manager Robin van Persie has taken the squad to Tubize, roughly 137km from their Rotterdam base, for the sessions this week.

Strict employment rules prevent the 31-year-old from training or playing on Dutch soil until his official paperwork is finalised.

Van Persie confirmed the logistical change was designed to help the winger settle immediately without breaching regulations.

“One of the reasons is that Sterling can train with the team,” said the Feyenoord boss.

“But we can also work on our team culture there. It’s for Raheem and for those processes that we’re going to do this.”

A fresh start in the Eredivisie

The England international arrived last week after departing Chelsea by mutual consent.

Sources indicated that around 18 clubs across Europe expressed interest before the forward chose to join the 16-time Dutch champions.

Sterling, who has previously represented Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal, brings vast experience to a side currently chasing the league title.

Feyenoord sit second in the Eredivisie table, though they currently trail leaders PSV Eindhoven by 14 points.

Race against time for debut

The Rotterdam club plan to return to the Netherlands following a final session on Wednesday.

Officials remain hopeful Sterling will receive clearance in time for Sunday’s home fixture against Telstar.

The experienced attacker boasts 20 goals in 82 caps for his country but has not featured for the national side since the 2022 World Cup.
