Fifa investigates alleged racist abuse of IShowSpeed at World Cup
Football’s world governing body has launched an official investigation into alleged racist abuse directed at American social media influencer IShowSpeed during Argentina’s victory over Cape Verde in Miami.
The 21-year-old internet personality was involved in a confrontation with an Argentina supporter in the stands at Hard Rock Stadium on 3 July.
Footage broadcast on the American creator’s channel showed him wearing a Cape Verde kit during the last-32 fixture.
With an audience of over 57 million subscribers, the prominent streamer has been broadcasting live from matches throughout the tournament.
His broadcasts have previously featured high-profile appearances from Fifa president Gianni Infantino and former AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Fifa reiterates commitment to diversity
Following the incident at the Miami venue, officials confirmed they were made aware of the allegations and immediately initiated an inquiry.
A formal statement from the governing body strongly emphasised their zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination.
“The Fifa World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect.”
The organisation firmly warned that anyone undermining these core values will face consequences.
“It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”
Mbappe racism row adds to tournament controversy
This latest investigation follows a separate controversy involving racist remarks directed at France forward Kylian Mbappe by a Paraguayan senator.
Celeste Amarilla, representing Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, posted derogatory comments on social media mocking the French World Cup winner’s origin and education.
The offensive remarks were published shortly after the South American nation was eliminated by the European side in the last 16 of the tournament.
In response, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced their firm intention to file criminal charges regarding the incident.
The federation strongly condemned Amarilla’s social media posts, officially describing them as utterly abhorrent and unacceptable.
