A senior FIFA council member has criticised the stringent logistical restrictions placed upon the Iran national team during this summer’s World Cup in the United States.

The Middle Eastern nation’s preparations for the finals have been severely hampered by ongoing diplomatic conflicts with the host nation and Israel.

As a result, the squad has been forced to establish their primary training camp across the border in Mexico.

Logistical challenges and visa denials

Numerous backroom staff members and federation officials were subsequently denied visas to enter American territory.

The travel restrictions dictate that the team must fly into the United States on the eve of their fixtures and depart within hours of the final whistle.

Broader operational issues have also affected the tournament, with supporters from Senegal and Ivory Coast facing entry barriers alongside a Somali referee.

Speaking anonymously to The Observer, a senior governing body official questioned the sporting integrity of the current situation.

“How can Iran be expected to compete under the conditions they have been given, in which they have to come from Mexico and leave the United States within hours of playing every match?”
“Every team is supposed to compete under the same conditions. How can they prepare properly for the matches they have to play?”

‘The most oppressed team in the World Cup’

Despite the chaotic build-up, the squad successfully secured a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening fixture.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed profound frustration at the lack of recovery time afforded to his players following Tuesday’s match.

“After the game, they said to us ‘You have to leave immediately’, whereas it’s very important for us to have recovery,” Ghalenoei stated.
“Our team is the most oppressed one in the whole World Cup. Our federation is not here, our media is not here, our management isn’t here.”

Players highlight communication breakdown

Forward Mehdi Taremi echoed his manager’s sentiments regarding the exhausting travel schedule and the absence of a robust support structure.

The experienced Inter Milan striker revealed that the squad is currently operating without essential communication channels to tournament organisers.

“Everything is a disaster, actually. As you see, our analyser, for example, has come here doing the job of the media,” Taremi explained.
