Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a torn ankle ligament during their victory over Ivory Coast.

The Borussia Dortmund centre-back sustained the injury in the first half of Saturday’s 2-1 Group E win and was substituted at the interval.

A scan on Sunday confirmed a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle, sidelining him for several months.

Nagelsmann laments ‘outstanding’ defender’s absence

With the tournament in the United States already underway, head coach Julian Nagelsmann is not permitted to call up a replacement.

However, the national team confirmed the central defender will remain with the squad for the time being to provide off-field support.

“Schlotti will be greatly missed on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially his excellent build-up play,” Nagelsmann stated.
“It could have been his World Cup. Yesterday, we all tried to lift his spirits – fortunately, he is a very positive character who is already looking ahead again.”

Defensive options remain strong for knockout stages

Despite the significant blow, the former Bayern Munich manager remains confident in his squad’s depth as they look towards the latter stages.

“Despite his absence, we are still very well positioned in central defence for the World Cup with Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rüdiger, Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw,” he added.

The European giants secured top spot in Group E following a dramatic comeback victory in their second fixture.

Trailing to a Franck Kessie strike, substitute Deniz Undav scored twice, including a deep stoppage-time winner, to book their place in the knockout stages for the first time in 12 years.

The four-time world champions will face Ecuador in their final group match on Thursday.
