Jeff Bezos-backed group acquires 33% minority stake in Liverpool
A consortium backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has officially agreed to acquire a 33% minority stake in Liverpool, marking the first time Fenway Sports Group’s ownership has shrunk since 2010.
The American billionaire is part of an investment group named 1892 Holdings, which takes its moniker from the year the Merseyside outfit was founded.
Despite the substantial capital injection, current proprietors Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will retain majority ownership and complete operational control at Anfield.
Tech and steel fortunes merge
British-Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia leads the newly formed consortium and will immediately assume the role of vice-chairman at the Premier League club.
Bhatia’s financial backing stems from the Mittal Family Trusts, linking the monumental deal to the globally renowned steel dynasty.
The tech mogul’s personal involvement is channelled through K5 Sports, where the 62-year-old serves as the lead investor.
Additional funding arrives via EE Capital, representing the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
A club statement confirmed the transaction will provide a platform for expansive future development on Merseyside.
The strategic investment supports Liverpool FC’s long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology and investment.
The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club’s leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club’s objectives on and off the pitch.
A critical period of transition
This historic financial restructuring arrives at a pivotal juncture for the six-time European champions.
The Reds are navigating a turbulent summer following the departure of talismanic forward Mohamed Salah and manager Arne Slot.
Those high-profile exits come just one year after the club lifted the 2025 Premier League title, leaving a significant void in both the dugout and the final third.
The $280bn (£217bn) e-commerce pioneer has flirted with major sports franchise acquisitions previously, having evaluated bids for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.
However, this definitive agreement on Merseyside represents his first concrete foray into the lucrative world of elite professional sport.
