Julian Alvarez requests Atletico Madrid exit amid Barcelona interest
Julian Alvarez has formally requested to leave Atletico Madrid this summer amid strong transfer interest from Arsenal and Barcelona.
The Argentine forward recently confirmed his desire to depart the Spanish capital in search of fulfilling a lifelong dream.
Despite joining from Manchester City in 2024, the 26-year-old submitted a formal transfer request to force a move away from his current employers.
Barcelona leading the chase
Barcelona midfielder Gavi has publicly backed the potential signing of the South American attacker.
“We’ll see what he decides to do with his future, but of course I’d love him to be with us. Besides, it’s his dream.” – Gavi
The Catalan giants are heavily linked with the former Premier League winner alongside English contenders Arsenal.
Conflicting board statements
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo admitted he was entirely caught off guard by the public declaration from his star striker.
“It caught us by surprise and we have done what we had to do. We’ve said that he is an Atletico de Madrid player and that we have no offers from anyone.” – Enrique Cerezo
Cerezo firmly insisted that the club has absolutely no intention of selling the prolific goalscorer.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta contradicted this narrative by confirming a substantial financial package is already on the table.
Awaiting a replacement
“Deco made an offer of a certain amount of money for Álvarez, who has wanted to join us since he was at City.” – Joan Laporta
Laporta revealed that Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin rejected the initial approach solely because they currently lack an adequate attacking replacement.
The highly sought-after international has established a formidable record, registering 49 goals across 106 appearances for the Spanish side.
With four years remaining on his current contract, any successful suitor will need to negotiate a significant transfer fee.
