Liverpool executive Michael Edwards resigns from senior FSG role
Michael Edwards has resigned as Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football two years into a three-year contract, ending his second stint overseeing operations at Liverpool.
The departure of the highly regarded strategist stems from mounting frustration over the ownership’s failure to acquire a second European club.
Fenway Sports Group had explored the possibility of implementing a multi-club model similar to the one utilised by Manchester City, assessing 25 different teams.
Failed multi-club expansion
Despite considering potential investments in European sides such as Getafe, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Malaga, the American ownership group ultimately backed away from securing any deals.
This lack of progress prompted the former sporting director to signal his intention to move on last autumn.
FSG president Mike Gordon will now assume increased day-to-day control of operations at Anfield following their inability to persuade him to stay.
A legacy of major trophies
The respected administrator previously built a formidable reputation by helping construct the squad that delivered the Champions League in 2019 and a first Premier League title under Jurgen Klopp in 2020.
His influence was also felt during the Merseyside club’s most recent domestic triumph in 2025, having returned to an expanded boardroom position to oversee wider football operations.
While plans for a sister club have stalled, FSG has continued to invest heavily in the first-team squad, breaking the British transfer record twice during last summer’s window.
Anfield boardroom uncertainty
His sudden exit exacerbates a period of significant instability within the Anfield hierarchy.
Current sporting director Richard Hughes is reportedly in discussions over a potential move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal ahead of his contract expiring in 2027.
This development follows a turbulent managerial transition, with Hughes having only recently appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot in May.
