Liverpool sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo in season-long loan deal
Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan to provide crucial defensive reinforcement for Andoni Iraola’s squad at Anfield.
The deal includes an option for the Premier League side to purchase the Uruguay international permanently for a pre-agreed fee of £47m next summer.
No initial loan fee will be paid, with the English club covering the centre-back’s salary for the duration of the campaign.
Demonstrating his eagerness to make the switch to Merseyside, the 27-year-old accepted a wage cut to finalise the transfer.
Having passed his medical on Monday, the versatile defender is available immediately and will integrate into team training later this week.
Easing the Anfield injury crisis
The arrival of the South American provides immediate relief to a depleted backline suffering from a mounting casualty list.
Joe Gomez remains sidelined following an injury sustained in the opening pre-season friendly, while Giovanni Leoni is continuing his recovery from a cruciate ligament tear suffered last September.
Summer recruit Jeremy Jacquet is nursing a minor knee problem, though the Frenchman is expected to return to training shortly.
Able to operate comfortably at right-back, the former LaLiga winner will also provide vital tactical cover for the absent Conor Bradley.
Rebuilding the squad’s leadership core
The acquisition of the dominant centre-half helps mitigate the departure of Ibrahima Konate, who joined Real Madrid upon the expiration of his contract.
While the club boasts highly-rated defensive prospects in Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Ndiaye, experienced reinforcements were deemed essential for the immediate term.
Named Barcelona captain in January, the Uruguayan adds significant leadership to a dressing room that recently lost veteran mainstays Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.
His exit from Catalonia comes after losing his guaranteed starting role in Hansi Flick’s title-winning side last season.
He becomes the second summer arrival under Iraola, following the earlier capture of Victor Munoz.
Attention will now shift to securing a high-profile winger to replace Salah, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola remaining the primary target despite the Champions League winners demanding over £100m.
