Manchester United have held talks regarding former Barcelona head coach Xavi, although interim manager Michael Carrick remains the firm favourite to secure the permanent position at Old Trafford.

Carrick originally replaced Ruben Amorim in January on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

The 44-year-old has since guided the Red Devils to Champions League qualification with three matches to spare.

Carrick leads the race

The former Middlesbrough boss has overseen a spectacular turnaround since taking caretaker charge.

United were sitting in sixth place when the English tactician assumed control of the first team.

They have since amassed 32 points from a possible 42 in the Premier League.

This dominant domestic run included impressive victories over title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal.

Xavi considers Premier League move

Despite the interim coach’s success, the club hierarchy are still exploring alternative options and plan to interview other candidates.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims the Spanish manager was offered to the Manchester club following Amorim’s departure.

“Xavi wants to also consider the Premier League as a potential destination, but not the only one,” Romano stated.
“I can also reveal to you that Xavi Hernandez was also proposed to Manchester United since January, since they decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim.”

European pedigree and future prospects

The legendary former midfielder has been out of work since departing Camp Nou two years ago.

During his tenure in Catalonia, he secured the 2022-23 La Liga title and has won nine total managerial trophies across his career.

Despite his desire to manage in England, an imminent move to Old Trafford appears unlikely given the current team’s outstanding form.

Recent reports suggest Premier League rivals Chelsea have also ruled the World Cup winner out of their own managerial search.
