Manchester United tell Luke Shaw to accept pay cut for new contract
Luke Shaw must accept a significant reduction to his current £200,000-a-week wages if he is to sign a new contract with Manchester United.
The 30-year-old’s current deal at Old Trafford is scheduled to expire in the summer of 2027, though the club holds an option for a further 12 months.
Reports suggest the Premier League side will not offer the same lucrative financial terms in their upcoming proposal.
Instead, the England international will need to agree to a restructured deal similar to the one recently accepted by team-mate Harry Maguire.
Maguire blueprint sets wage standard
Maguire recently committed his future to the Red Devils by signing a one-year extension until 2027 on strictly reduced terms.
It remains to be seen whether the experienced full-back will accept a comparable compromise to extend his stay in Manchester.
The defender was an integral figure last season, starting all 38 league fixtures to help secure a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.
However, the financial structure at the club is undergoing a strict review ahead of a busy summer transfer window.
Carrick targets defensive reinforcements
New permanent head coach Michael Carrick is reportedly exploring the market for additional options on the left side of his defence.
This search has been accelerated by the departure of Tyrell Malacia, who recently left the club as a free agent.
Securing their established left-sided specialist on a lower salary would free up vital funds for Carrick’s impending rebuilding project.
