Mohamed Salah promises fresh start after Egypt’s controversial World Cup exit
Mohamed Salah has promised a fresh start for Egyptian football following their controversial last-16 World Cup elimination by reigning champions Argentina.
The Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal advantage in the final 15 minutes of the tie before suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat.
Enzo Fernandez struck a stoppage-time winner for the South American side to seal their progression.
The late goal sparked furious protests from the North African squad, who believed they were denied a clear penalty moments earlier when their talisman was challenged inside the box.
Egypt lodge official Fifa complaint over refereeing
Tensions boiled over at the final whistle, with striker Mostafa Ziko publicly labelling the match as rigged.
Manager Hossam Hassan echoed those frustrations, while the national federation confirmed they have filed an official complaint to Fifa regarding the officiating.
Despite the anger of his colleagues, the Liverpool forward acted as peacemaker by pulling teammates away and shaking hands with the match officials.
The veteran attacker later addressed the supporters directly through a social media statement.
“I know you’re still upset, but I promise you that I’ll do everything in my power to ensure this marks a fresh start for Egyptian football on the international stage,” he wrote on X.
“Qualifying for the World Cup won’t be enough, and just participating won’t cut it either. This team deserves your trust.”
Collina dismisses integrity claims amid backlash
Despite the bitter exit, the tournament represented a historic breakthrough for the Egyptian national team.
A group stage victory against New Zealand marked their first ever win at a World Cup finals, securing their maiden appearance in the knockout phases.
With the former Roma and Chelsea star turning 38 by the 2030 tournament, it remains uncertain if he will feature again on the global stage.
However, Fifa referees’ chief Pierluigi Collina has strongly condemned the accusations of bias directed at his match officials.
“Constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport,” Collina stated.
“Nobody can question the integrity of the Fifa World Cup match officials.”
