Moises Caicedo replaces Enner Valencia as Ecuador World Cup captain
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has been appointed as Ecuador’s new captain midway through the World Cup after Enner Valencia chose to step down from the role.
The South American nation are currently preparing to face Mexico in the round of 32 following a dramatic group-stage progression.
A crucial 2-1 victory over Germany secured third place in Group E for Sebastian Beccacece’s side.
That monumental win followed a difficult start to the tournament, featuring a defeat by the Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao.
Valencia hands over the armband
Valencia started all three opening fixtures but struggled to find the back of the net during his time in North America.
An emotional handover ceremony confirmed that the veteran forward was relinquishing leadership duties to his younger compatriot.
Caicedo will now lead his country for the remainder of their tournament, starting with Tuesday night’s knockout tie in Mexico City.
The midfield anchor already wore the armband during the decisive group-stage victory against the Germans.
Premier League leadership experience
Taking on extra responsibility is not entirely new for the 25-year-old.
He previously captained Chelsea during Premier League encounters against Manchester United and Manchester City late last season.
Domestic cup campaigns also saw him lead out the Blues against both Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic.
Should Ecuador successfully navigate their upcoming clash with Mexico, they will set up a last-16 tie against either England or DR Congo.
