Newcastle hold talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez
Newcastle United are set to hold crucial talks with Manchester City over the next 48 hours as they attempt to secure the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
The Magpies are actively searching for reinforcements following the high-profile departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali from St James’ Park.
New manager Matthias Jaissle, who replaced Eddie Howe following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, has already welcomed six additions to Tyneside this summer.
However, securing a top-tier replacement for the departed Brazilian international remains a critical priority for the North East club.
Replacing Guimaraes
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the Spanish playmaker is now the primary target on Newcastle’s recruitment shortlist.
The club had previously considered alternative options, including former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Portuguese international Joao Palhinha.
“I think now Nico for sure is the most prominent name on their shortlist,” Fabrizio Romano noted on the Market Madness podcast.
“From what I’m hearing, Man City are not closing the door to the exit of Nico.”
Any potential deal will require the Tyneside outfit to meet a strict valuation set by the reigning champions.
Guardiola’s squad find themselves notably short of central options after losing Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders during the current transfer window.
Stepping out of the shadows
A move to St James’ Park would offer the talented midfielder an opportunity to establish himself as a regular starter after previously playing an understudy role.
He showcased his significant potential during an FA Cup semi-final victory over Southampton last season, scoring a spectacular goal that drew widespread praise.
City manager Pep Guardiola was quick to highlight the player’s impressive attributes following that commanding cup performance.
“Nico has to believe more in himself, he has incredible attributes to do that, but sometimes he plays too safe,” Pep Guardiola explained.
“The moment he makes that step, we’ll be playing to play regularly.”
With vital discussions scheduled to take place shortly, Newcastle supporters will be hoping their new management team can finalise a deal to revitalise the midfield.
