Newcastle United sign Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba in £35.5m deal
Newcastle United have completed the signing of 20-year-old French midfielder Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco in a deal worth £35.5m.
The highly-rated youngster arrives at St James’ Park having made just 11 senior starts during a rapid breakthrough season in Ligue 1.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe has identified the powerful enforcer as a deep-lying midfielder capable of transforming his side’s engine room.
Physical dominance and passing range
Despite his swift ascent to top-flight football, the new arrival has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most formidable ball-winners.
He averaged an impressive 9.06 successful duels per 90 minutes in the French top tier last season, ranking higher than any other player in the division.
Former Monaco technical coach Abel Lorincz worked closely with the rising star during his integration into the first team.
“He has the physicality, he has the aerial ability,” Lorincz said.
Breaking down the opposition
Beyond his tackling prowess, the imposing Frenchman possesses a sophisticated passing repertoire that initially caught the eye of former Monaco boss Adi Hutter.
During his full debut against Auxerre last September, the combative talent successfully completed 74 of his 78 attempted passes.
“I think his main attribute is playing against a low block, those tiny little passes to break down a low defence,” Lorincz explained.
Lorincz also praised the player’s ability to remain calm in possession, noting his exceptional talent for turning away from pressure in tight spaces.
A rapid rise to the Premier League
The £35.5m fee is already being viewed as a potential bargain given the youngster’s unique combination of press-resistance and defensive solidity.
Earning his stripes in the principality club’s B team, his composure during senior training sessions quickly made him an undroppable asset.
“The game against Auxerre was a very good first sign of things to come. By the end of the season, he was a regular,” Lorincz added.
The St James’ Park faithful will now be hoping their latest acquisition can seamlessly translate his dominating European form into the relentless environment of the Premier League.
