Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo faces a significant spell on the sidelines after suffering a foot injury during the recent victory over Sunderland.

The Japan international was forced off on a stretcher at the Stadium of Light after catching his foot in the turf while making a clearance.

It was a cruel blow for the 33-year-old, who was making his first Premier League start of the current campaign.

Endo had been drafted in as an emergency right-back by manager Arne Slot to cover for a growing list of absentees in defence.

Slot facing defensive headache

The injury leaves Liverpool short of options at the back, with specialist full-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong already ruled out.

Endo has been limited to just 12 appearances across all competitions this season due to fierce competition for places.

However, captain Virgil van Dijk insists the experienced midfielder will be a major loss to the squad’s dynamic.

“It is a shame, we were all really gutted after the game,” Van Dijk said.

“I had a similar injury when I was at Southampton, a foot injury, and it is not an easy one to take.”

‘One of the leaders’

Despite his limited playing time, Van Dijk emphasised the former Stuttgart man’s importance behind the scenes.

“We are here for him, we are going to be together with him all the way and support him with everything he needs,” added the Netherlands defender.

“It is not great, he is such an important and respected member of the team, he is one of the leaders and he always leads by example as well.”

“It is a big blow but we have to deal with it and we will.”

Uncertain timeline for return

Slot was unable to confirm a precise return date following Liverpool’s FA Cup win over Brighton, but admitted the outlook was concerning.

“There is definitely a chance [he can return before the end of the season], but he will be out for a while,” the Liverpool boss stated.

“He will not be in the squad next week and he will not be in the squad next month.”

“We are hoping at the end of the season he has a chance to be with us again, but that also depends on the upcoming days.”

Former England forward Les Ferdinand has expressed significant concern regarding the lack of depth in striking options available to the national team ahead of the World Cup.

The Premier League legend believes the scarcity of homegrown centre-forwards competing at the top level is a major issue for Gareth Southgate’s side.

While England captain Harry Kane continues to excel as a prolific goalscorer for Bayern Munich, the domestic scoring charts are currently dominated by overseas talent.

‘A worrying situation’

Ferdinand fears that the backup role to Kane will simply fall to whoever finds a temporary run of form late in the season.

Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently the only English player to reach double figures this campaign with 10 goals.

Speaking to the Press Association, the 59-year-old said: "At the moment he [Kane] is the exception to the rule in terms of churning goals out year in, year out."

"It’s who is the other they’re going to take. It’s a dilemma because I think any striker that has a period now where he’s scoring goals will have an opportunity to go to the World Cup."

Ferdinand noted that discussions around experienced forwards like Danny Welbeck had "gone a bit quiet" recently.

He added: "That just shows you the lack of number nines there is in the country at the moment. It’s a worrying situation."

Hall of Fame induction

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur striker addressed the media after being inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame in Manchester on Tuesday.

Ferdinand sits 12th in the all-time Premier League scoring charts with 149 goals but earned only 17 caps for his country.

He attributes his limited international appearances to the intense competition for places during the 1990s and 2000s, a sharp contrast to the current landscape.

"Back in the day, the level of striker that was around: Mark Bright, Ian Wright, Teddy Sheringham, Alan Shearer, David Hirst," Ferdinand recalled.

"There were so many centre-forwards, number nines, and that was what we were traditionally known for."

Lack of competition

The newly inducted Hall of Famer believes the modern dearth of talent is due to a lack of genuine competition pushing players to improve.

He cited the likes of Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore and Andy Cole as peers who kept his own performance levels high.

"These guys kept you on your toes, because if these guys were scoring at the weekend you felt, ‘well I have to score if I want to be mentioned in the same echelons as them’," he explained.

"That level of competition’s not there anymore so that’s why I think there’s a dearth of talent coming through."

Liverpool and Paris St-Germain have joined the pursuit of Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, rivalling Manchester United and Arsenal for the midfielder’s signature.

The Ligue 1 champions have reportedly been monitoring the 23-year-old throughout the current campaign.

Liverpool are also now keen on securing the Englishman, intensifying competition alongside Premier League rivals Manchester United and Arsenal.

Representatives for the player are understood to be aware of the mounting interest from Europe’s elite.

However, Rogers is contracted at Villa Park until 2031, meaning a significant transfer fee would be required to force a move.

Milan stand firm on Pulisic

AC Milan are set to reject approaches for United States winger Christian Pulisic from a trio of Premier League clubs.

Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham have all been linked with a summer move for the 26-year-old.

Previous reports suggested an offer of around €70m (£58m) might tempt the Serie A giants into a sale.

But the Rossoneri are determined to retain their top scorer, who has netted eight league goals this term to aid their domestic campaign.

City eye defensive reinforcements

Manchester City are lining up a move for Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento.

Pep Guardiola has reportedly been tracking the defender for several months as a potential long-term solution on the right.

The Premier League champions have been forced to deploy midfielder Matheus Nunes in defense recently due to squad constraints.

While the Magpies hope to tie the 23-year-old to a new deal, he is yet to commit to fresh terms at St James’ Park.

Liverpool open Szoboszlai talks

Negotiations are progressing between Liverpool and Dominik Szoboszlai regarding an improved contract.

The Anfield club have no intention of selling the Hungary captain despite rumors linking him to Real Madrid.

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to meet the midfielder’s demands to ensure he remains on Merseyside.

Szoboszlai has been a standout performer this season, contributing 10 goals and six assists across all competitions.

Woltemade seeks Bundesliga return

Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade is reportedly unhappy on Tyneside and is seeking an immediate return to Germany.

The 6ft 6in forward only arrived in August but is already eyeing a move back to the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich and former club Stuttgart have been touted as potential destinations for the 24-year-old.

Jose Mourinho has come under intense scrutiny for comments suggesting Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr is partly responsible for the racist abuse he receives.

The Portuguese coach made the controversial remarks following a chaotic encounter in Lisbon involving the Spanish champions.

Mourinho appeared to imply the Brazilian international “provokes” hostility, a stance that has drawn sharp condemnation from observers.

Critics have labelled the viewpoint archaic, arguing that a player’s on-field behaviour never justifies discriminatory abuse.

Mbappe offers strong support

Kylian Mbappe has publicly backed his team-mate, firmly rejecting the notion that the winger is to blame for the treatment he endures.

The French World Cup winner took to social media to encourage his strike partner to continue expressing himself freely.

“Dance Vini Junior and please never stop. They will never tell us what we have to do or not.”

Mbappe also stated to journalists in the mixed zone that he heard Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni direct racist slurs at the former Flamengo star.

The France captain claimed several Benfica players also witnessed the alleged verbal assault during the match.

Prestianni denies allegations

The incident reportedly occurred during a heated exchange, with Prestianni firmly denying the accusations levelled against him.

The Argentine winger took to Instagram to refute claims he used racist language towards the Real Madrid number seven.

“I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”

UEFA investigation pending

European football’s governing body is now expected to launch a full investigation into the events in the Portuguese capital.

While Mourinho stated in his Amazon Prime interview that he would remain “independent” regarding the specific investigation, his broader comments on provocation have overshadowed the process.

Vinicius Jr has frequently been the target of racist abuse throughout his time in La Liga and European competition.

Real Madrid earned a slim Champions League play-off advantage over Benfica on a chaotic night in Lisbon that saw Vinicius Jr report an alleged racist comment.

The Brazilian winger scored a brilliant curling strike in the second half to secure the victory for the Spanish giants.

However, the match was overshadowed by the scenes that immediately followed the goal.

Vinicius was initially shown a yellow card for an exuberant celebration in front of the home supporters at the Estadio da Luz.

The forward then approached the referee to report an alleged racist comment directed at him from the stands.

Play suspended in Lisbon

The incident resulted in a significant 11-minute stoppage before play was eventually able to resume.

Tensions remained high on the touchline, resulting in Benfica manager Jose Mourinho being sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now take a one-goal lead back to the Bernabeu for the second leg next Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Galatasaray stormed to a stunning victory over Italian heavyweights Juventus in a seven-goal thriller.

The Turkish champions secured a commanding 5-2 win at RAMS Park despite falling behind in the first half.

Galatasaray stun Juventus

Gabriel Sara opened the scoring for the hosts before a brace from Teun Koopmeiners put the Serie A side ahead at the break.

The home side responded emphatically in the second period to take complete control of the tie.

Goals from Noa Lang, Davinson Sanchez and Sacha Boey established a massive three-goal cushion ahead of the return trip to Turin.

In Germany, Borussia Dortmund overcame pre-match travel chaos to defeat Atalanta 2-0.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes after the Dortmund team bus was caught in traffic en route to the stadium.

Dortmund quick out of the blocks

The delay did not affect the hosts, who took the lead inside three minutes through a Serhou Guirassy header at the back post.

Max Beier doubled the advantage shortly before half-time to seal a comfortable win for Nuri Sahin’s men.

Finally, Champions League holders Paris St-Germain recovered from a horror start to beat 10-man Monaco 3-2.

The Parisians found themselves trailing by two goals before a red card changed the complexion of the tie.

PSG comeback against 10 men

Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin was dismissed for a studs-up tackle on Vitinha following a VAR review.

Desire Doue came off the bench to spark the revival for the French champions.

The substitute scored twice and set up Achraf Hakimi to complete the turnaround ahead of the return leg in Paris.

England striker Ivan Toney has hinted at a potential return to the Premier League following his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.

The 29-year-old forward secured a lucrative switch to the Middle East but has suggested his time in the English top flight may not be over.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Brentford talisman refused to close the door on a future comeback to English football.

Liverpool stand firm on Szoboszlai

Liverpool have absolutely no intention of selling midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai despite speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The Anfield club are instead progressing with talks over a new contract for the 25-year-old Hungary captain.

Szoboszlai has become a key figure in the Reds’ engine room and the club are keen to secure his long-term future on Merseyside.

Updates on Rashford and Jackson loans

Manchester United are reportedly refusing to lower their £26m asking price for Marcus Rashford.

The 28-year-old forward is currently away from Old Trafford on loan at Barcelona, but United will not accept a cut-price fee to make the move permanent.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich are not expected to trigger a clause to buy Nicolas Jackson following his loan move from Chelsea.

The Blues will have to evaluate their options for the 24-year-old Senegal striker when he returns from the Bundesliga in the summer.

Rudiger linked with London return

Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rudiger is attracting interest from Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Ham ahead of the summer window.

The 32-year-old Germany defender is a known quantity in the Premier League following his previous successful stint with Chelsea.

Another defender drawing interest is Nottingham Forest’s Murillo, though the club have placed a £70m valuation on the Brazilian to ward off Chelsea.

Woltemade eyeing Germany return

Nick Woltemade is reportedly unhappy with life at Newcastle United and is looking for a route back to the Bundesliga.

The 24-year-old German striker would welcome a move to either Stuttgart or Bayern Munich to end his stay at St James’ Park.

In other transfer news, Atletico Madrid are attempting to persuade Julian Alvarez to sign a new deal, although the Argentine World Cup winner prefers a switch to Barcelona.

Finally, Everton are set to reject any approaches from Tottenham for 27-year-old midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Feyenoord have moved their training camp to Belgium to allow new signing Raheem Sterling to practice with the squad while awaiting a Dutch work permit.

Work permit delays prompt logistical switch

Manager Robin van Persie has taken the squad to Tubize, roughly 137km from their Rotterdam base, for the sessions this week.

Strict employment rules prevent the 31-year-old from training or playing on Dutch soil until his official paperwork is finalised.

Van Persie confirmed the logistical change was designed to help the winger settle immediately without breaching regulations.

“One of the reasons is that Sterling can train with the team,” said the Feyenoord boss.

“But we can also work on our team culture there. It’s for Raheem and for those processes that we’re going to do this.”

A fresh start in the Eredivisie

The England international arrived last week after departing Chelsea by mutual consent.

Sources indicated that around 18 clubs across Europe expressed interest before the forward chose to join the 16-time Dutch champions.

Sterling, who has previously represented Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal, brings vast experience to a side currently chasing the league title.

Feyenoord sit second in the Eredivisie table, though they currently trail leaders PSV Eindhoven by 14 points.

Race against time for debut

The Rotterdam club plan to return to the Netherlands following a final session on Wednesday.

Officials remain hopeful Sterling will receive clearance in time for Sunday’s home fixture against Telstar.

The experienced attacker boasts 20 goals in 82 caps for his country but has not featured for the national side since the 2022 World Cup.

Former Premier League striker Dave Kitson has publicly confirmed his identity as the author behind the ‘Secret Footballer’ pseudonym after 15 years of speculation.

The 44-year-old finally ended the mystery surrounding the anonymous columnist and author who exposed the inner workings of the elite game.

Kitson, who featured for Reading, Stoke City and Portsmouth, used the platform to highlight the “billion-dollar circus” of modern football.

Ending the speculation

Fans and dedicated websites had spent over a decade analysing clues from the weekly dispatches to determine who was behind the accounts.

The articles offered a candid look at dressing room politics, the influence of agents and the cynicism within the industry.

While player-led podcasts are now common, the column was considered ground-breaking for its time.

Kitson has now admitted the writing served as a necessary release during his playing career.

“I am The Secret Footballer. I’ve never said that out loud before,” Kitson said.

“It was an idea that came to me when I wasn’t happy with where football was going and I needed an outlet to express it for my own mental health.”

A cathartic release

The former forward revealed that he originally aspired to be a travel writer before finding himself in professional sport.

He described the writing process as a way to cope with the pressures and misgivings of the industry.

“I never set out to be a footballer. It was one of those things that just happened,” he added.

“The writing was cathartic. It helped me process what was going on in football.”

Premier League pedigree

Kitson made 81 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 15 goals in the top flight.

Across a career spanning seven clubs, the target man netted 115 times in 403 total matches.

He also achieved significant success with Reading, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League with a record-breaking 106 points in the 2005-06 Championship season.

Kitson is now working as a motivational speaker following his retirement from the professional game.
