Phil Foden aims to repay Manchester City faith under Enzo Maresca
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is determined to repay the club’s unwavering faith after signing a new long-term contract and embracing a fresh start under incoming manager Enzo Maresca.
The 26-year-old recently committed his future to the Etihad Stadium by signing a four-year deal that keeps him with the reigning champions until 2030.
Despite enduring a difficult period on and off the pitch, the academy graduate feels rejuvenated ahead of the upcoming campaign.
“It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me and give back to the football club for them trusting in me,” Foden said.
“It’s about time I try and repay them and give back to the club.”
A difficult period for the playmaker
The former Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year has struggled to replicate his exceptional 2023-24 form over the last two campaigns.
The creative midfielder scored just 10 times last term and has failed to find the net in his past 31 appearances for club and country.
A combination of off-field issues and a persistent ankle injury hampered his progress, culminating in his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The Three Lions ultimately reached the semi-finals before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, an experience the forward admitted was painful to watch from afar.
Reuniting with a familiar face
Following the departure of long-serving boss Pep Guardiola at the end of last season, Italian tactician Maresca has officially taken the reins in Manchester.
The appointment marks a reunion for the Stockport-born star, as Maresca previously worked extensively within the City academy and as a first-team assistant.
“It is very strange but I know Enzo from before, so that also helps,” Foden explained.
“I know him quite well and what he is about, and that has definitely helped to have that relationship with him.”
Managerial backing and future ambitions
The new head coach immediately demonstrated his man-management skills by contacting the English forward following his recent international squad snub.
“He reached out just after to see if it was OK, which was very nice of him, to show us this character and the person he is,” noted the six-time Premier League winner.
Maresca himself has been quick to emphasize the paramount importance of getting his star player back to playing with a smile on his face.
“It is my duty to help him be the Phil we all want,” the Italian manager stated.
“First of all, to be happy and enjoy football is most important. If he feels good, he can help us win titles.”
