Jose Mourinho has taken unprecedented control of Real Madrid’s transfer strategy ahead of the 2026 season, pivoting the club towards experienced signings like Marc Cucurella to deliver immediate success.

The veteran manager is already dictating the Spanish giants’ summer recruitment despite not yet being formally announced as their new head coach.

He recently held a summit at a Madrid hotel with club executives and agent Jorge Mendes to plot a drastic squad transformation.

Previous managers at the Bernabeu frequently expressed frustration over their lack of influence regarding incoming players.

However, the former Chelsea boss has broken that mould by personally identifying targets and directly overseeing negotiations.

Shift to experienced recruits

This newfound authority has sparked a stark departure from the capital club’s recent focus on youth.

Last summer, the 15-time European champions acquired four prospects with an average age of just 21 and a half.

The incoming class of 2026 features established internationals boasting an average age nearing 29.

Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konate have already been secured.

Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries is also expected to be made official shortly.

The Portuguese tactician is clearly prioritising immediate silverware over long-term project building.

Cucurella highlights swift business

The aggressive new approach was evident in the rapid €55m acquisition of Cucurella from Chelsea.

Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had previously explored deals for the Spanish left-back.

However, the defender revealed that the Madrid powerhouse wrapped up the transfer in less than two days.

“It was very fast,” Cucurella admitted.

“My agents called me in the morning, said the clubs had already discussed everything.”

“We had it done in a day and a half… I think the best thing is that Madrid came in so strong.”

A personal phone call from the incoming manager proved pivotal in convincing the 27-year-old to return to Spain.

The two-time Champions League-winning coach impressed the full-back by recalling specific tactical moments from a recent European clash.

“Our talk was quite quick, he didn’t want to keep me for long,” Cucurella said.

“What I liked was that he remembered moments of mine from when we played Benfica in the Champions League, and what I brought to the team.”

“That game was a long time ago. The fact that he remembered it was a nice way of seeing that he liked me as a player.”

Solving a problem position

The left side of defence has been a consistent issue for the La Liga heavyweights.

Alvaro Carreras arrived for €50m last year but lost his place following a dressing-room altercation with Antonio Rudiger.

Meanwhile, Ferland Mendy continues to struggle with persistent injury problems.

The arrival of the popular Spanish international is expected to provide immediate stability to a fractured backline.
